Helping you to help your writers
A Mind of One's Own provides tailored, individual training and coaching to writers who mentor other writers.
We'll cover creating emotional safety for yourself and group members, setting boundaries, managing your own and your writers' over-functioning (and associated burnout), managing potential mental health difficulties or safety concerns that may emerge, and dealing with your own and your writers' impostor concerns. Alison can also help you to develop fine-tuned listening skills, helping you build trust, rapport and attuned capacity to hear beneath what your writers are saying. This training and coaching helps you to be clear about your expectations of yourself and your writers; to identify where, specifically your responsibilities start and finish. You'll also get help to detect and manage "unspoken contracts" - relational dynamics that can emerge in a group, or between individuals.
Apart from helping you with these practical elements of the mentoring process, Alison can provide training in the skills that Alison teaches to individual writer clients. These include skills of emotion regulation, adaptive thinking, self-acceptance and compassion, as well as skills to help your writers manage procrastination and perfectionism, impostor syndrome, and self-doubt.
In essence - A Mind of One's Own has you covered.
Alison has trained and coached writing mentors and loves this work as it is central to her ethos of helping as many writers as possible.
